One more thing. if your bar is in a hotel, you want to be sure the interface works well with your property management system. Ask if the system has a 2-way interface. Having this allows you to pull up a previously closed check, adjust it and re-close it. very handy.

This is a really good post about the requirements for a POS system. #2 (Reporting) gets really interesting as soon as the bar expands out to more than one location ... trying to get data out of systems that were set up separately, or even completely different POS systems is a royal nightmare.

Need to make sure that it can grow with you, if you need it to.

Another interesting observation ... most POS hardware on the market is 5+ years old, and the software is normally 6 - 8 years old. You probably want to pick something from a vendor with some sort of track record, because the POS will be around, even if the vendor is gone.

Thanks for the great article!

Great post and one I will definitely be retweeting to my followers. On the surface considering a POS system seems simple enough but you do a good job of highlighting things most either take for granted or don't even consider. Like the hardware support and training. The CTV is a something that I think more business are going to need going into this economy when money is getting tight and temptations rise.
