Hi Barry, Good advice and this will ensure you get paid from the sale of your services while they enjoy your wi-fi. As an update to this post I went to a hotel for lunch today because they advertised wi-fi and I needed it for a meeting. After logging on to their "free" connection, I discovered they wanted 20 Euros/day for the privilege of me using their wi-fi. I asked at reception if I could have a password considering as how I was about to spend money on lunch and they said no! I left....

Can I also suggest not unlocking your connection, rather putting a sign up which says "Free WIFI - ask for the password when you buy your drink".

That way you are almost guaranteed that the users of the 'Free' service are actually sitting in your premises, not next door in the greasy spoon cafe.

Nice post Barry. Just a quick addition, it makes a lot of sense to add free wifi connection to your restaurant offerings. For instance a good percentage of Panera bread customers visit because of the free wifi, instead of paying at Starbucks, etc. However, it must come with an objective beyond free. It should help drive sales. It must collect visitors information. It must be used as a source of customer acquisition tool and reminder.

We offer wireless services like this and we know the results our customers are getting with a right strategy.
